Family Violence Death Review Committee (FVDRC) - Roles and functions when working in a complex system.
Presented by Rachel Smith
Rachel Smith is a lead coordinator for the Family Violence Death Review Committee (FVDRC). She leads the review of family violence deaths and uses the insights and information gathered through the death review process to support an improved systemic response to family violence. Rachel’s prior work in the family violence sector has been across local government, health and the voluntary sector in the UK and New Zealand. She has a master’s of science in human rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a bachelor of arts in women’s studies and sociology from the University of Auckland.
Rachel will speak about the role and functions of the FVDRC when working in a complex system . Complex problems and systems require different engagement and change strategies. In its Fifth Report, the FVDRC suggests that attempting to reform the family violence system while continuing to think and speak about family violence in exactly the same way is unlikely to produce systemic changes. Outdated and inaccurate ways of thinking about what the problem is, and how services should respond (evidenced in the death reviews), will undermine any attempted reforms. The systemic changes the FVDRC proposed are dependent on shifting the underlying collective narrative about family violence.
