As we embrace the auspicious year of 2024, we are thrilled to announce a significant milestone-the launch of the new Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS). This marks the first major review since 2017 and comes after several years of consultation by the IPPF Evolution Project Team. On 24 January, we commenced a comprehensive learning journey with an online webinar, setting the stage for numerous events as we navigate the new GIAS in this transition year.
Please refer to the webinar playback from 24 January, which includes details about the presenters, content of the final Standards, rationale supporting decisions, and learning objectives.
A Milestone for the Profession
The introduction of these standards represents a significant stride towards elevating the internal audit profession. As internal auditors, the new standards call for embracing a strategic, leadership role within organisations. While maintaining independence remains paramount, the emphasis is now on collaborative work within other governance and assurance structures. This collaborative approach is designed to deliver consistent and reliable insights, steering organisational success.
Overwhelming Support and Resources
The launch of these standards represents a remarkable initiative and to facilitate your comprehension through this transition year, both Global (The IIA), IIA NZ and other affiliates will provide an array of resources, including press releases, reports, and recorded sessions, which we will make available to IIA NZ members. We recommend initiating your exploration at The IIA's 2024 Global Internal Audit Standards webpage, offering access to the new standards and a condensed version. Additionally, explore The IIA resource webpage, specifically tailored to how the new Standards will amplify the impact of your internal audit function. Delve into webinars, courses, and more to gain insights into the Standards and kickstart their adoption before the effective date. To access The IIA resource page, click here.
IIA NZ's Commitment to Your Readiness
Looking ahead, IIA NZ is committed to ensuring your readiness for the new standards. We will provide updated tools, resources, guidance, workshops throughout the year. Collaboration is key, and we will actively engage with The IIA and other affiliates, sharing valuable information and knowledge with our members. Furthermore, we will work closely with government, businesses, and stakeholders to enhance their understanding of the indispensable role of internal auditors.

To keep pace with developing trends and the ever-changing risk landscape, it is essential for IIA certification holders to regularly enhance their knowledge, skills, and competencies through continuing professional development. Certification holders renew their certifications annually and demonstrate their commitment to keeping their knowledge current and their skills sharp by earning and attesting to continuing professional education (CPE) credit hours throughout the year.
Certification Renewal Requirements
Annual Certification Renewal opens 1 October each year. Log in to the Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS) to begin your renewal.
The renewal deadline is 31 December each year. Should you fail to renew your Active certification, it will enter a Grace status, and as a result, you are no longer approved to represent yourself as a certified individual. Individuals remaining in Grace for 2 years will enter a Revoked status and must reapply and retest if they wish to become certified again.
As an IIA certified or qualified professional, you are responsible for ensuring that your certification is renewed annually. You must log in to CCMS to complete your certification renewal.
For further information, please refer to the Global IIA Annual Certification Renewal Policy document. (see attached).
What is changing?
The most significant policy change is that once a certification is expired, it cannot be reinstated. The certification is revoked if the holder goes 3 years or longer without reporting CPE. If an individual with a revoked certification wishes to become certified again, they must reapply to the certification program and pass all required exams to recertify.
For further details, please refer to the summary of changes and certification status table available on the Global IIA website.
